  1. Embrace individuality but keep it simple. At this stage, the spotlight is on your newest addition, so consider wearing neutral and comfortable clothes that don’t draw attention away from your baby. Everyone should feel relaxed and at ease in their outfits – whether that’s your favorite pair of jeans and a soft tee, a comfortable dress, or a cozy sweater. Avoid matchy-matchy outfits, overly vibrant patterns or loud logos that might distract from your baby. Let your outfits reflect your own unique taste and preferences.
  2. Decide on a color palette. Selecting a color palette that complements your home decor will create a sense of cohesion in your family portraits. Soft pastels, neutrals, & light earthy tones are some of my favorites for newborn sessions. Consider where you might want to hang these photos in your home and choose colors that match the space.
  3. Baby’s attire. For your little one, less is more. Diaper shots are wonderful for capturing all those adorable baby rolls. You can put a bloomer over the diaper if you like. Alternatively, a legless, sleeveless onesie or bubble romper is a great option. If your baby enjoys being cozy, we can wrap them in a blanket while you hold them. Opt for a neutral, pattern-less blanket to ensure simplicity and focus on your baby.
  4. Comfort and confidence are key. Prioritize comfortable fabrics that make you feel good. This is especially important during an at-home newborn session, where the atmosphere should be relaxed and natural. Avoid overly formal attire that might make you feel out of place in your own home. When everyone feels comfortable and confident, it shines through in the final photos.
  5. Limit patterns and absolutely no words or logos! This goes back to simplicity – it’s important to ensure that nothing distracts from your newborn. Too many patterns can get clashy and take away focus from your baby. Logos and words are an absolute no-no unless there’s some meaningful reason to include them.
