Preparing for your brand photo shoot

Sooo last week I wrote about the importance of doing professional brand photos. Now let’s chat about prepping for your brand session! If the prospect of reading and comprehending this blog stresses you out, don’t worry about it. I can always talk you through it through a phone chat and you can skip all the reading material. But if you’re into it, here we go…

I’m a natural light branding photographer in NYC, Westchester, Fairfield County and the Hudson Valley. I started offering brand photographer over a decade ago in NYC. I’m here to help you capture the essence of your brand and showcase your beautiful self and work to the world. To make the most out of our session, there are a few things you can do to prepare.

Side note: I’m featuring a spiritual healer in those post, but know that I work with many different types of entrepreneurs! From professionals to coaches to artists, fitness instructors and writers. Take a look at my branding portfolio to get a fuller picture of what your unique session might look like.

1. Define Your Branding Colors

Before we embark on our photo adventure, it’s essential to clarify your branding colors. If you haven’t already done so, don’t worry—I’m here to help! Your brand colors play a significant role in creating a cohesive look at your photo shoot, so let’s make sure we’re on the same page. It’s also important to have a general aesthetic…this one is easy. Look at my brand portfolio. If that style and vibe is what you are looking for, then there you go, that’s your aesthetic and we are the right fit!

2. Curate Your Outfits

When it comes to outfits, remember the golden rule: minimal distractions! Bring several outfits in your brand colors, and let’s keep the focus on you and your radiant personality. Aim for attire that accentuates your best features while staying true to your brand’s vibe. If you’re unsure, don’t fret—I’ll be there to assist you in selecting the most photogenic options. Avoid super bright colors, bright whites (go for an off white), and anything with logos or words unless you’ve got a good reason.

For a basic session, we’ll photograph 2-3 outfits. It’s always a good idea to bring more than that, giving us room to play and find the perfect combinations. If you’re going for the Boss session, we’ll photograph 4-5 looks, so make sure to pack accordingly.

3. Prepare Your Wardrobe

Before our session, take the time to steam or iron your outfits. Smooth, wrinkle-free clothing helps create a polished look. Pleeeaaasssse don’t be expecting me to “just photoshop that.” I can work some editing magic, but ironing clothes in post production is usually pretty impossible. If we find ourselves in a location without the necessary equipment, don’t worry—I’ll have a trusty steamer on hand to work its magic as long as we are doing an indoor session. For outdoor sessions, keep everything lying flat or hanging in the car, and we can use the car for costume changes.

4. Don’t Forget the Touch-Ups

While I can provide a makeup artist upon request, it’s always a good idea to bring your own makeup and hair essentials for touch-ups throughout the shoot. After all, you know your face and hair better than anyone else! I want you to feel confident and camera-ready throughout the session. I’ll be there to zhush (one of my favorite words) you throughout our session, staring at you with super attentive detail oriented serious faces and mindfully brushing that one hair into the exact right place.

5. Add Some Brand-Boosting Props

Props can add a touch of personality and authenticity to your branding photos. Bring along items that represent your brand, such as books, journals, your trusty computer, pens, flowers, crystals, or even your beloved musical instrument. These props will help tell your brand story and add a unique flair to the images.

6. Stay Hydrated and Nourished

A photoshoot can be a fun, but sometimes tiring, experience. Remember to bring water and some snacks to keep yourself refreshed and energized. I want you to feel your best throughout our session, and a little break can be a major boon.

With these tips in mind, you’re well on your way to nailing your branding photo session. Together, we’ll create stunning visuals that truly reflect the essence of your brand and showcase your important work. I can’t wait to capture your unique story and help you connect more fully with your ideal peeps!
